So I got a friend of mine into Flames of War today, he had been looking at it but after 40k was reluctant to get into a new game. Buthrakaur made a good point about how to make a decent Tigerkompanie on the cheap and he splurged on the box. Having promised him I'd make a tank company to fight I opted for some IS-2s.
After building the shiny new tanks we decided to take em for a spin. 5 tigers runs about 1250 or so not sure on the math, so I took a command IS-2 two platoons of 3 IS-2s and a tiny shock pioneer company. We rolled for mission and got Cauldron. I was the defender. Fearless is huge for those guys, I was bailed out so many times by those tigers and never failed to get right back into the tanks on the following turn with a lot of cursing and spitting from the officers no doubt. I went about 50/50 on armor saves which is about right for IS-2 front armor versus tigers, but man oh man he burned 4 of my total 7 IS-2s and the only thing that saved the last three was that they came in reserve and had to run to the fight. I never even hit a tiger much less destroy it. In the last turn the Pioneers failed their tank terror test, the only motivation test I failed all game!! I'm glad though since CJ, my friend, was unclear on why exactly I got so many IS-2s and he got so few Tigers. Even though the statistics were a bit off I believe the game displayed the disparity between veteran and trained, heck it even taught me things about how different they were. Surveying the field at the end of the game it was remarked how unlucky it was for so many russians to be screaming "AIEE IT BURNS!" as their IS-2s crackled in the winter evening, I responded "Look at the bright side, at least David will be pleased!"
